Best time to travel from Makkah to Madinah is a question most pilgrims ask too late, after they have already committed to a departure time that puts them in the worst traffic of the week.
Most Umrah transport guides focus on which vehicle to book or how much it costs. This guide focuses on when to travel, because the same 430 km journey on Highway 40 can take 4 hours at the right time or 7 hours at the wrong time.
If your travel dates are fixed, your departure time usually is not. Understanding the traffic patterns, seasonal pressures, and daily timing windows on this route gives you the practical information to make the journey as smooth as possible.
Day of Week – The Single Biggest Factor in Journey Time
The Makkah to Madinah route on Highway 40 experiences its heaviest traffic on Thursday evening and Friday morning. This pattern repeats every week regardless of season and affects the journey more than almost any other factor.
- Thursday from approximately 2pm onwards: Jeddah and Makkah residents travel toward Madinah for the weekend. The highway experiences heavy northbound traffic for several hours. A journey that takes 4.5 hours on a Tuesday afternoon can take 6.5 to 7 hours departing Thursday at 5pm.
- Friday from approximately 8am to 2pm: The reverse flow begins. Madinah residents and weekend visitors return south toward Makkah and Jeddah. Southbound traffic on Friday morning is consistently the heaviest of the week.
- Friday after Jumu’ah (approximately 1pm to 4pm): Both directions experience congestion as post-prayer traffic merges with weekend return traffic.
The cleanest days to travel are Saturday, Sunday, Monday, and Tuesday. Wednesday is also generally clear. If you have any flexibility in your Makkah to Madinah departure day, avoid Thursday afternoon and Friday entirely.

Best Departure Time Within the Day – The Four Windows
Once you know your travel day, the departure time within that day is the second most important variable. The Makkah to Madinah route has four distinct traffic windows each day.
Window 1:
Early morning (2am to 6am): The optimal window for this route. Virtually no traffic on Highway 40. Journey consistently completes in 4 to 4.5 hours. This is the window used by pilgrims making the overnight departure for Fajr arrival at Al-Masjid an-Nabawi. Departing Makkah at 2am to 3am allows arrival in Madinah before or at Fajr prayer, one of the most spiritually meaningful arrival experiences on the Umrah journey. The highway is cool and comfortable during these hours even in summer months.
Window 2:
Morning (6am to 10am): Generally clear with light traffic. Journey takes 4.5 to 5 hours. The road warms up quickly after sunrise in summer but remains manageable. A good window for families who prefer daytime travel.
Window 3:
Midday to early afternoon (10am to 3pm): Moderate traffic near Makkah city exits and near Madinah approach. Journey typically 5 to 5.5 hours. The hottest part of the day in summer months. Air conditioning in a modern vehicle handles this well but rest stop comfort decreases during summer midday.
Window 4:
Late afternoon to evening (3pm to midnight): The most variable window. On weekdays this is generally manageable at 5 to 6 hours. On Thursdays this window is the worst of the entire week at 6.5 to 7+ hours. During Ramadan this window includes the post-Iftar traffic surge described in Section 3.
Ramadan Timing – The Most Important Season to Plan Carefully
Ramadan transforms the traffic patterns on the Makkah to Madinah route more than any other seasonal factor. The holy month brings the highest pilgrim volumes of the year and creates specific daily traffic patterns that do not exist at other times.
Post-Iftar (approximately 30 minutes after sunset to midnight):
This is the single most congested daily window on the entire route during Ramadan. After breaking the fast, millions of pilgrims and residents travel simultaneously. The Makkah city exits, the highway itself, and the Madinah approach all experience peak congestion in this window. A journey that normally takes 4.5 hours can take 8 to 10 hours departing immediately after Iftar during the last ten days of Ramadan.
Pre-Suhoor and post-Suhoor (approximately 1am to 3am):
The quietest window of the entire Ramadan day. Traffic drops dramatically in the hours before Suhoor begins. This is the recommended departure window for any Makkah to Madinah journey during Ramadan.
Post-Fajr (approximately 6am to 9am during Ramadan):
A secondary quiet window. Pilgrims who traveled for Tahajjud and Fajr at the Haram are returning to hotels to sleep. Roads are clear for approximately 2 to 3 hours after Fajr prayer during Ramadan.
Last ten days of Ramadan:
The most challenging travel period of the entire year. Even the quieter windows experience more traffic than a standard Ramadan day. If your Makkah to Madinah journey falls in the last ten days of Ramadan, the pre-Suhoor window is the only consistently reliable departure time. Book your taxi well in advance during this period as vehicle availability is at its tightest.
Seasonal Overview – Which Months Are Best for the Journey
| Month | Temperature | Traffic | Booking pressure | Overall |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| January to February | Cool 20 to 28°C | Low | Moderate | Excellent |
| March to April | Warm 28 to 36°C | Moderate | High (Ramadan period) | Good |
| May | Hot 36 to 42°C | Low | Low | Good if heat managed |
| June to August | Very hot 40 to 46°C | Low | Low | Manageable in AC vehicle |
| September | Hot 38 to 44°C | Low | Low to moderate | Good |
| October to November | Warm 28 to 36°C | Moderate | Moderate | Very good |
| December | Cool 22 to 30°C | Moderate | High (school holidays) | Good |
January and February are consistently the most comfortable months for the Makkah to Madinah journey. Temperatures are moderate, highway traffic is manageable outside of prayer times, and the journey consistently completes within the standard 4 to 5 hour window.
The school holiday periods in June to August (Pakistani, Indian, and UK family pilgrim peak) and December to January (UK and European winter break pilgrim peak) bring higher booking pressure for vehicles. During these periods book your transport at least 4 to 6 weeks in advance to secure your preferred vehicle at standard rates.
Summer months (June to August) have the lowest traffic on the route because the heat deters some pilgrims. For families traveling in air-conditioned vehicles, the summer can actually be a practical choice for the highway portion of the journey since the roads are clear. Rest stops are less comfortable in summer heat but the journey itself proceeds smoothly.
Practical Timing Recommendations by Pilgrim Type
- Families with young children: Depart in Window 1 (2am to 6am) or Window 2 (6am to 10am). Young children sleep through early morning journeys. Avoid Thursday afternoon and the post-Iftar Ramadan window entirely.
- Elderly pilgrims: Window 2 (6am to 10am) on a weekday is the most comfortable balance of daylight, manageable temperature, and clear roads. The early morning window is also suitable if the group can manage a pre-dawn departure.
- Solo pilgrims or couples: Any weekday window works well. The early morning departure for Fajr arrival in Madinah is particularly recommended for its spiritual significance.
- Groups of 11 or more (Hiace or Coaster): Larger vehicles take longer to load and unload. Plan departure at least 30 minutes earlier than the target window to account for loading time.
- Pilgrims with flight connections from Madinah: Work backward from your flight time. Madinah Airport is approximately 15 km from the city center. For a 10am flight, your Madinah hotel arrival should be no later than 7am, requiring a Makkah departure no later than 2am to 3am even in clear conditions. Always add buffer for peak periods.
