Madinah to Riyadh via Highway 60 and Highway 65 – Route and Rest Stops
The journey from Madinah to Riyadh follows Highway 60 east from Madinah before connecting with Highway 65, the central corridor running south toward Riyadh. Both highways are modern, well-maintained expressways with regular rest areas, fuel stations, prayer facilities, and food outlets throughout.
From Madinah, the highway initially heads southeast through the outskirts of the city before the landscape opens into the vast central Arabian plateau. The terrain is predominantly flat desert for the bulk of the journey, making it a smooth and consistent drive despite the distance.
The key stopping points along the route:
Badr junction (approximately 150 km from Madinah):
The road passes near the historic valley of Badr. For pilgrims who wish to visit the Badr Battlefield as part of their journey, this is the natural diversion point. The Badr site is approximately 20 km off the main highway. A Badr Ziyarat stop adds approximately 1.5 to 2 hours to the total journey. See our Madinah to Makkah via Badr page for full details on the Badr site itself.
Al-Hanakiya (approximately 220 km from Madinah):
An early service town on the route with fuel stations, small cafeterias, and prayer facilities. A good first stop for families with children.

Al-Qassim region, Buraydah (approximately 500 km from Madinah):
The midpoint of this journey and the most significant service stop. Buraydah is the capital of Al-Qassim province, one of Saudi Arabia’s most important agricultural regions famous for dates. The area has multiple large service stations, restaurants, fuel, and prayer facilities. Al-Qassim is where we plan the main rest stop on this route.
Al-Majma’ah (approximately 750 km from Madinah):
A service town in the Sudair region approximately 150 km north of Riyadh. A good third stop before the final approach to the capital.
Riyadh approach (final 80 km):
Traffic builds as the highway enters the greater Riyadh metropolitan area. The final approach on weekday evenings and Friday afternoons can add 30 to 45 minutes.
For a 980 km journey we plan two to three rest stops of approximately 20 to 30 minutes each, keeping the total journey within 9.5 to 10.5 hours including breaks.
Traveling to Madinah from Riyadh – A Journey of Intention
For Riyadh families and pilgrims, the journey to Madinah carries a weight that no other road trip in Saudi Arabia carries. Al-Masjid an-Nabawi, the Prophet’s Mosque, peace be upon him, is one of the holiest places in Islam and the destination that motivates this 980 km journey.
Many Riyadh families travel to Madinah for Ziyarat at Al-Masjid an-Nabawi specifically to offer prayers, visit the Rawdah al-Muttaharah (the area between the Prophet’s pulpit and his grave), and experience the tranquility of the holy city. Some combine this with Umrah in Makkah as a complete pilgrimage trip.
The overnight departure pattern is particularly beloved among Riyadh pilgrims. Departing from Riyadh after Isha prayer at approximately 9pm to 10pm, resting briefly during the journey, and arriving in Madinah in time for Fajr prayer at Al-Masjid an-Nabawi is a deeply meaningful way to begin a visit to the Prophet’s city.
The arrival at dawn, with the green dome of the Nabawi mosque visible as the sky lightens, is an experience many Riyadh pilgrims describe as one of the most moving moments of their lives.

Our drivers understand the spiritual purpose of this journey and approach it with the same respect and care as the pilgrims they serve. Prayer stops are always accommodated and the pace of the journey is adjusted for the comfort and spiritual readiness of passengers.
Riyadh to Madinah via Badr – Adding a Ziyarat Stop
For pilgrims traveling from Riyadh to Madinah, an optional stop at the Badr Battlefield is available. Badr lies approximately 150 km southwest of Madinah and approximately 830 km from Riyadh, making it a natural diversion on the approach to Madinah.
The Battle of Badr in 624 CE was one of the most decisive events in early Islamic history and is mentioned in the Quran. Visiting the site where the companions of the Prophet ﷺ stood is a profoundly moving experience for any Muslim pilgrim.
A Badr stop adds approximately 1.5 to 2 hours to the total journey including travel to and from the site and time at the Badr graves and Masjid al-Arish. The total Riyadh to Madinah via Badr journey takes approximately 11 to 12 hours.
Please mention the Badr stop at the time of booking so we can plan the departure time and arrival in Madinah accordingly. An additional fare applies for the Badr diversion. For full details on the Badr site visit our Madinah to Makkah taxi via Badr page.

SAPTCO bus:
Intercity buses operate between Madinah and Riyadh with journey times of approximately 12 to 14 hours. Tickets cost approximately SAR 60 to 80 per person. The bus departs from Madinah bus terminal rather than Nabawi-area hotels and has very limited luggage space. Not practical for families or pilgrims with standard travel luggage.
Domestic flight:
Saudia and other carriers operate Madinah (MED) to Riyadh (RUH) flights with an air time of approximately 1 hour 30 minutes. However pilgrims staying near Al-Masjid an-Nabawi must first transfer from their hotel to Prince Mohammad Bin Abdulaziz Airport (approximately 15 to 20 km), then check in, fly, collect luggage, and transfer from King Khalid International Airport to their Riyadh destination (approximately 35 km from central Riyadh).
Total door-to-door time is typically 4 to 5 hours. For solo travelers this is clearly faster. For families with Umrah luggage, Zamzam water, and gifts from Madinah, a private taxi eliminates all these steps.
