Riyadh to Makkah and Madinah for Umrah – Planning Your Journey
For Riyadh-based pilgrims, the journey to Makkah or Madinah for Umrah is one of the most significant and regularly repeated journeys of their lives. Understanding the options and planning the departure correctly makes the difference between a smooth pilgrimage start and an unnecessary struggle.
Riyadh to Makkah is approximately 860 km via Highway 40 and takes 8 to 9 hours by private taxi. Most Riyadh pilgrims depart in the early morning between 2am and 5am to arrive in Makkah before the midday heat and to begin their Umrah in the cooler morning hours.
Riyadh to Madinah is approximately 980 km via Highway 60 and 65 and takes 9 to 10 hours. Many Riyadh pilgrims use the beloved overnight departure pattern, leaving Riyadh after Isha prayer at approximately 9pm to 10pm and arriving in Madinah in time for Fajr prayer at Al-Masjid an-Nabawi. This is one of the most spiritually meaningful ways to begin a visit to the Prophet’s city, arriving as the Fajr Adhan sounds and the green dome emerges in the pre-dawn light.
For both journeys, pre-booking is essential. The distances involved make these among the most significant taxi bookings a family will make. Book at least 48 hours in advance and during Ramadan and Hajj season book at least one to two weeks ahead.
Vehicle recommendation for Umrah families: For families of 4 to 5 traveling with Umrah luggage, a Hyundai Staria at SAR 1,500 provides the best balance of space, comfort, and value. For families of 6 to 7, the Staria at SAR 1,500 per vehicle is consistently more economical than equivalent flight tickets plus airport transfers at both ends.
Uber, Careem, and Green Taxi in Riyadh – What to Know
What is the green taxi in Riyadh?
The green taxi in Riyadh refers to the government-regulated metered taxi service operated by licensed local drivers. These are the official street taxis of Riyadh, identifiable by their green and white color scheme, and they operate on a meter for local city trips.
Green taxis are useful for short local journeys within Riyadh such as hotel to meeting, airport to hotel, or within the city center. They are not suitable for intercity travel to Makkah, Jeddah, or Madinah as they do not operate on long-distance fixed-fare routes and drivers are generally not equipped for multi-hour cross-kingdom journeys.
The Umrah Taxi is a pre-booked private service with fixed fares confirmed before travel. For intercity routes and pilgrim journeys, this certainty is essential.
Does Uber work in Riyadh?
Yes. Uber and Careem both operate actively in Riyadh and are among the most widely used transport options in the city for local trips. On average a 20-minute UberX ride in Riyadh costs approximately SAR 28, which is competitive for short local journeys.
However for long-distance intercity travel to Makkah, Jeddah, or Madinah, Uber and Careem do not operate. These apps cover local city rides only and are not suitable for the 860 to 980 km cross-country journeys that are our primary service from Riyadh.
For airport transfers, Uber and Careem are available at KKIA but during peak Umrah season and Hajj, surge pricing applies and vehicle availability for families with significant luggage can be unpredictable. A pre-booked private taxi with a confirmed fare and confirmed vehicle type provides the certainty that pilgrims departing or arriving at KKIA need.
Bolt and other ride-hailing services have limited availability in Riyadh compared to Uber and Careem.
The Riyadh Metro:
The Riyadh Metro opened in 2024 and provides public transport across six lines covering the city. KKIA is not yet connected to the metro network. For airport transfers and intercity travel, private taxi remains the most practical option.
Getting Around Riyadh – Local Transport Guide
Riyadh is one of the largest cities in the Middle East by area, covering over 1,700 square kilometers. The city is built on a grid system with wide multi-lane roads connecting its distinct districts. Understanding the geography and transport options saves significant time.
City layout:
The main areas relevant to business and leisure travelers are the King Abdullah Financial District (KAFD) in the north, the historic Diriyah area on the western outskirts, the downtown area around Al-Mamlaka Tower (Kingdom Centre), and the diplomatic quarter in the west. KKIA is approximately 35 km north of the downtown area.
The Riyadh Metro:
The Riyadh Metro opened in 2024 with six lines and 85 stations covering the main city corridors. It is the most significant public transport development in Saudi Arabia’s history. The metro is useful for travel between the downtown area, King Abdullah Road, and the university districts. KKIA is not currently connected to the metro. For airport journeys, private taxi or ride-hailing remains necessary.
Ride-hailing apps:
Uber and Careem both operate extensively and are the most practical option for short city trips. The apps have good coverage across all main Riyadh districts and typically offer 5 to 15 minute wait times outside peak periods.
Summer in Riyadh:
Riyadh experiences extreme summer heat from May through September with temperatures regularly exceeding 45 degrees Celsius. All our vehicles are fully air-conditioned. For long-distance journeys during summer, early morning departures are strongly recommended.
Traffic patterns:
Riyadh experiences significant congestion particularly during the Thursday evening and Friday morning peak as residents travel for the weekend.
The King Fahd Road and the Northern Ring Road are the main corridors and both experience heavy congestion during peak periods. For airport departures, allow at least 2 hours from central Riyadh to KKIA during peak traffic.
