What is Ziyarat in Makkah? – Meaning and Purpose
Ziyarat literally means “visit” in Arabic, but in the context of Makkah it carries a much deeper meaning. Makkah Ziyarat refers to visiting the sacred and historically significant sites in and around the city that are connected to the Prophets, peace be upon them, the Companions (Sahaba), and the major events of early Islamic history.
These visits are not obligatory acts of worship like Tawaf or Sa’i. They are recommended acts of reflection and remembrance, moments to stand where history breathed and to feel a connection to the generation that carried the message of Islam into the world. For most pilgrims, Ziyarat transforms the Umrah experience from a religious obligation into a living, breathing encounter with Islamic history.
Makkah ki Ziyarat Pakistan, UK, aur duniya bhar ke hajiyon ke liye ek khaas roohani tajruba hai. Ziarat e Makkah mein woh muqaddas maqamaat aate hain jo Hazrat Muhammad ﷺ ki zindagi se munsalik hain.
The Umrah Taxi provides private Ziyarat tours that allow you to visit these sites at your own pace, with adequate time for prayer, reflection, and personal duʿa at each location, without the pressure of a shared group schedule.
Makkah Ziyarat Places – The Most Important Sites to Visit
Below are the main Ziyarat sites covered in our tours. For a complete guide with full historical and spiritual context for every site, visit our Makkah Ziyarat places guide. Here we provide the essential information a pilgrim needs to understand what they will visit and why it matters.

Jabal al-Nour (Cave of Hira):
The mountain of light. Jabal al-Nour is one of the most visited Ziyarat sites in Makkah because at its summit lies the Cave of Hira, where the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ received the first revelation of the Quran through the Angel Jibreel, peace be upon him.
The climb to the cave is approximately 1.5 to 2 km and takes 30 to 45 minutes up depending on physical condition. For elderly pilgrims or families with children, viewing the mountain from below and reflecting on its significance is equally meaningful. Included in both short and full tours.
Jabal Thawr (Cave of Thawr):
The cave of trust and reliance. Jabal Thawr is where the Prophet ﷺ and his companion Abu Bakr al-Siddiq, may Allah be pleased with him, took refuge for three days during the Hijrah (migration) from Makkah to Madinah.
The mountain is approximately 4 km south of Masjid al-Haram. The cave itself requires a significant climb. Included in the full tour. For pilgrims who prefer not to climb, a stop at the base with time for reflection is available.
Jannat al-Mu’alla:
The historic cemetery of Makkah. Jannat al-Mu’alla is where many of the Prophet’s ﷺ closest relatives are buried, including his beloved wife Sayyidah Khadijah, may Allah be pleased with her, and his grandfather Abdul Muttalib.
Pilgrims visit to offer Salaam and reflect on the sacrifices made by the earliest Muslims. The cemetery is open at specific times of day and is located close to Masjid al-Haram. Included in both short and full tours.
Arafat and Jabal al-Rahmah:
The plain of mercy and the mount of forgiveness. The Arafat plain is where the Prophet ﷺ delivered his Farewell Sermon and where pilgrims gather on the 9th of Dhul Hijjah for Wuquf, the standing that is the heart of Hajj.
Jabal al-Rahmah, the Mount of Mercy within the Arafat plain, is associated with divine mercy and forgiveness. Visiting this site outside of Hajj season is deeply moving, particularly when one knows the significance of what took place here. Included in both short and full tours.
Masjid al-Jinn:
The mosque of the Jinn. Masjid al-Jinn marks the location where, according to Islamic narration, a group of jinn heard the recitation of the Quran by the Prophet ﷺ and accepted Islam.
The mosque is one of the historically significant sites in Makkah and is included in the full tour.
Mina:
The valley of sacrifice and devotion. Mina is the site of some of the most significant Hajj rituals, including the Rami (stoning of the Jamarat) and the sacrifice on Eid al-Adha.
Outside of Hajj, a visit to Mina allows pilgrims to understand the physical setting of these rituals and reflect on the story of Prophet Ibrahim, peace be upon him. Included in both short and full tours.
Muzdalifah:
The place of stillness and simplicity. Muzdalifah lies between Mina and Arafat and is where Hajj pilgrims spend the night after returning from Arafat, gathering pebbles for the Rami.
Outside Hajj, Muzdalifah is a quiet, open landscape that reminds visitors of the simplicity and humility of the pilgrimage experience. Included in both short and full tours.
Canal of Zubaida (Nahr Zubaida):
A remarkable feat of early Islamic engineering and charity. The Canal of Zubaida was a water supply system built in the 9th century by Zubaida bint Jafar, the wife of Caliph Harun al-Rashid, to bring fresh water to Makkah and the pilgrims.
Remnants of this historic infrastructure remind visitors of the generations who served the pilgrimage. Included in the full tour.
Masjid Ayesha (Taneem Mosque) – Miqat:
Masjid Ayesha in Taneem, approximately 7 km from Masjid al-Haram, is the Miqat point used by pilgrims already in Makkah who wish to perform additional Umrah. Named after Sayyidah Aisha, may Allah be pleased with her, who used this location to enter Ihram at the instruction of the Prophet ﷺ.
This is the closest Miqat to the Haram and the most commonly used by pilgrims during their stay in Makkah. Available as a separate Miqat transfer or combined with any Ziyarat tour.
Masjid Nimrah:
The mosque at Arafat from which the Prophet ﷺ delivered part of his Farewell Sermon. A significant historical site within the Arafat plain. Included in the full tour.
Private Ziyarat Taxi vs Shared Bus – Which Is Right for You?
Many tour operators in Makkah run shared Ziyarat buses that collect pilgrims from multiple hotels and follow a fixed group route. These buses are a common option and for some pilgrims they work well. Understanding the difference helps you choose what is right for your group.
| Feature | Private Ziyarat Taxi | Shared Ziyarat Bus |
|---|---|---|
| Vehicle | Your group only | Mixed group of strangers |
| Departure time | Your choice | Fixed schedule |
| Time at each site | As long as you want | Typically 10 to 15 minutes |
| Route | Customizable | Fixed itinerary |
| Pace | Unhurried, personal | Group pace, often rushed |
| Pickup | From your hotel | Fixed pickup points |
| Cost per person | SAR 72 to 290 depending on group size | SAR 40 to 80 per person |
Private taxi:
Best for families, elderly pilgrims, first-time visitors, and anyone who wants adequate time at each site for prayer, reflection, and personal duʿa. You decide how long to stay at each location. If something moves you deeply, you can remain. If a site is not what you expected, you can move on. The tour belongs to your group entirely.
Shared bus:
Better suited for solo pilgrims on a tight budget who are comfortable following a group schedule and spending 10 to 15 minutes at each stop. Bus Ziyarat tours operate from fixed departure points and may not collect from your specific hotel. The pace is determined by the group and the driver, not by your personal spiritual experience.
